Erbil (Kurdistan24) – The American University of Kurdistan (AUK) will hold its sixth Commencement ceremony in Duhok on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 6:00 PM, awarding certificates to 68 students.
Many of these graduates are relatives of martyrs of the ISIS war and political prisoners.
Halmat Kestai, spokesperson for AUK, informed Kurdistan24 that the graduates come from the colleges of engineering, business, science and arts, and international studies.
He highlighted that most of these students have studied free of charge, acknowledging their special status as relatives of martyrs and political prisoners.
Founded in 2014 by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani as a non-profit institution, AUK aims to prepare future leaders through a comprehensive American-style education.
The university focuses on transformative knowledge, innovative research, ethical community service, respect for inclusion and diversity, global connectedness, and life-long learning.
These principles are designed to support economic, environmental, social, and political advancement on regional, national, and global levels.
AUK uses English as its language of instruction and follows a "liberal arts" system, which offers a broad range of courses in the humanities and natural sciences before students specialize in their chosen fields.
This educational approach is widely practiced in the United States. Since its inception, AUK has graduated over 700 students.
