Iraqi FM Fuad Hussein, Iranian counterpart discuss regional security, bilateral relations

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein expressed his satisfaction following discussions held this morning with Acting Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri.

He announced, "There will be further discussions between Bagheri, the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, and other Iraqi officials."

This announcement came during a joint press conference with Acting Foreign Minister Bagheri, who is currently visiting Baghdad.

Hussein elaborated on the scope of their talks, emphasizing the importance of "strengthening and developing relations" between Iraq and Iran.

He stated, "Our relations are extensive and multifaceted, encompassing not only historical and geographical ties but also economic, political, and social connections."

The discussions also covered regional security issues. Hussein highlighted the region's sensitive situation, noting, "There are convulsions, tensions, and wars. It is absolutely necessary that we study these issues, consult, and engage in dialogue to reach solutions."

He stressed the urgency of addressing the dangerous security situation in the region, saying, "The region is on fire, and we need continuous consultations and meetings to calm the situation."

Additionally, Hussein addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, expressing support for a permanent ceasefire. "We touched on a ceasefire in Gaza," he said, "We are in favor of a permanent ceasefire, not just an interim one."

Hussein also warned of the potential for an Israeli attack on southern Lebanon, which could further destabilize the region.

He reiterated Iraq's stance in favor of a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and cautioned, "We touched on the dangerous signals we are receiving about the possibility of an attack on southern Lebanon and the expansion of the war. If an attack occurs on southern Lebanon, this will affect the entire region."
