Abdullah Hazhar discusses the richness of Kurdish music, upcoming projects
"Kurdish music is incredibly rich and diverse, with unique styles in every city and region in Kurdistan," he said, emphasizing that the variety of Kurdish music "is astounding, and its cultural influence on the Middle East is significant."
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Kurdish singer and songwriter Abdullah Hazhar recently sat down with Kurdistan24 to discuss his artistic journey, the richness of Kurdish music, and his upcoming projects.
Kurdistan24: Can you tell us about your body of work?
Abdullah Hazhar: I have a project called Mexak, which is a collection of Kurdish folk songs. I wanted my debut to carry a strong Kurdish identity. Although it did not receive widespread acclaim, it’s essential to stay true to pure art. Many artists gain popularity through inauthentic means, but our focus remains on genuine artistic expression.
Kurdistan24: How would you describe the richness of Kurdish music and songs?
Hazhar: Kurdish music is far from poor; it's incredibly rich and diverse, surpassing many other musical traditions. Each city and region in Kurdistan has its unique musical styles, dialects, and forms. From "Heyran" and "Lawok" to "Qettar", "Hore", and "Siachemana", the variety is astounding. The cultural influence of Kurdish music on the Middle East further underscores its richness.
Kurdistan24: Do you feel that the authenticity of Kurdish music has declined?
Hazhar: Unfortunately, yes. Compared to the past, the current generation's musical preferences have shifted, impacting traditional Kurdish music. However, there is a resurgence thanks to a new wave of talented artists reviving folk music with high quality and dedication.
Kurdistan24: Which musical style do you prefer?
Hazhar: I appreciate all styles as each has its unique flavor. I lean towards arabesque and styles that emphasize vocal expression, as they suit my voice and artistic approach.
Kurdistan24: How has technology impacted Kurdish music?
Hazhar: Technology has significantly benefited Kurdish music. Advanced musical instruments and sound systems have enhanced the quality of our music, making it more accessible and enjoyable for both artists and audiences.
Kurdistan24: Can you share any details about your upcoming project?
Hazhar: I am currently working on my latest album, which is in the composition and distribution phase. I plan to release it soon, accompanied by a video clip for my fans.
