ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced in a statement on Sunday that Switzerland contributed one million US dollars to support refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and individuals at risk of statelessness in Iraq.
“With this new funding, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) can strategically allocate resources to areas where they are most needed,” the statement added.
The statement also revealed that since 2019, in collaboration with the Iraqi government, UNHCR has helped over 200,000 Iraqis obtain essential documents.
“Iraq generously hosts approximately 300,000 refugees, with the majority residing in towns, villages, and cities alongside Iraqi communities. About 32 percent of these refugees live in nine refugee camps located in the KR-I [Kurdistan Region of Iraq],” per the statement.
