ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - The Kurdistan Region's Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources announced a significant step in promoting fish production and supporting local livelihoods.
On Saturday, more than 135,000 fingerlings were released into Darbandikhan Lake and Pris Pond in Halabja.
This initiative aims to bolster the fish population in these water bodies, ensuring a sustainable source of food for the community and providing income opportunities for families involved in the fishing industry.
The ministry recognizes the importance of fish as a dietary staple and a source of livelihood for many in the region.
This effort underscores the KRG's commitment to enhancing the agricultural and livestock sectors.
Fish stocking involves releasing artificially raised fish into natural bodies of water, such as rivers, lakes, or oceans, to bolster existing wild populations or establish new ones.
Karim Sulaiman, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Water Resources of the KRG, stated in a press conference that the Ministry's Training Directorate has produced 500,000 fingerlings this year.
