ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A drone strike hit a house in the Kurdish refugee camp in Makhmour on Tuesday afternoon, killing one person and injuring two others.
Major-General Sirwan Barzani, Commander of Sector 6 of the Peshmerga forces, confirmed to Kurdistan24 that the attack occurred at 4:45 p.m. The identity of the drone remains unknown, and the reason for the strike has yet to be determined.
Barzani added that it is still unclear whether the victims were armed at the time of the attack. Authorities are investigating the incident.
Makhmour refugee camp was founded in 1998. It is estimated that nearly 20,000 Kurdish refugees live in this camp, most of whom fled the civil war between the Kurds and the Turkish Army during the 1990s.
The camp has experienced repeated bombardments by Turkey, which has accused the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) of controlling the camp, resulting in both human and material damage.
