ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, at the opening of the Slevana wheat marketing factory in Zakho on Saturday, emphasized the Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) commitment to expanding market access for local farmers, enabling their products to reach both regional and international markets.

Describing the Slevana project as "very important", the Prime Minister highlighted the factory's adherence to international standards and its role in the KRG's strategy to facilitate private sector marketing of farmers' wheat.

He expressed hope that the private sector would establish similar factories in Zakho and other regions, thereby further supporting farmers and aligning with the KRG's plans.

PM Barzani reiterated the ninth cabinet's dedication to the agricultural sector and food industry.

"In the past few years, whether as the government or with the assistance of the private sector, we have implemented several agricultural projects, and have opened a number of silos across the region," he stated.

Emphasizing the importance of market access, he noted, "We have taken practical steps to find domestic and foreign markets for the products of Kurdistan Region’s farmers and we will continue to do so. Today, our farmers' products reach the markets of Arab and European countries."

He further encouraged farmers to maintain high product standards and adopt modern agricultural practices.

The Prime Minister highlighted the broader impact of agricultural development, stating, "One of the main themes of the ninth cabinet is to diversify sources of income in the Kurdistan Region. Today, the development of the agricultural sector and food security has created thousands of job opportunities for young people."

Concluding his address, PM Barzani reiterated the KRG's support for domestic production, aiming to shift the region's society from a consumer-based to a producer-based model.

He emphasized the importance of supporting local factories and projects to enhance competitiveness with foreign products.

The Slevana factory stands as a testament to the KRG's vision for a modernized and thriving agricultural sector, capable of meeting local needs while also tapping into international markets.
