ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has called on all political parties to engage in a "peaceful and civilized" campaign for the upcoming Kurdistan parliamentary elections, which officially began on Wednesday, Sept. 25, and will run until Oct. 15.

Prime Minister Barzani made the remarks during a visit to Najiba Khani Jalizadeh School in Koya to mark the start of the new academic year 2024-2025.

The ceremony was attended by Dr. Alan Hama Saeed, Minister of Education, Erbil Governor Omid Khoshnaw, and other regional officials.

In his speech, Prime Minister Barzani described the beginning of the election campaign as a "historic day for all the people of the Kurdistan Region," urging political parties to prioritize the region’s collective interests.

"Everyone should consider the supreme interests of our country above all other interests," PM Barzani stressed.

The Independent High Election Commission (IHEC) has scheduled the sixth session of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) parliamentary elections for Oct. 20.

PM Barzani underscored the importance of a successful election process, stating, "The success of the elections and the appointment of representatives must serve our people and country and ensure all our rights, God willing."

A New School Year Begins

Following the speech, Prime Minister Barzani rang the bell to kickstart the new academic year officially and entered several classrooms, including a fifth-grade class at Najiba Khani Jalizadeh School.

There, he shared insights on the history of the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections and its significance to the region.

"For the first time in Koya, in the independent administration of Raperin, President Masoud Barzani decided to hold the Kurdistan parliamentary elections and said that elections must be held, the parliament must be established, and the system of governance must become democratic," PM Barzani explained to the students.

He expressed his hopes for the future of education in the Kurdistan Region, adding, "I hope that, thanks to this governance and country, all students will become very great, expert, and intelligent people, God willing."
