ERBIL, Kurdistan Region (Kurdistan 24) – The Republicans have regained control of the Senate in early Wednesday by at least 51 seats out of a 100, according to the well-known U.S. medial networks, on Wednesday.

That followed after winning two key seats in Ohio and West Virginia, after long time strong campaigning for the election.

The victory was achieved by Bernie Moreno, a Colombian-born former car dealer, who was able to oust Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, who had held office since 2007 and hoped to retain it for a new term.

That was the second Senate seat that Democrats lost to Republicans in Tuesday's election.

Well-known U.S. media outlets projected that Republican Jim Justice would win the seat held by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia.

Manchin did not run for re-election, and the Democratic Party nominated former Mayor Glenn Elliott in his place.

Democrats currently hold a very slim majority in the Senate (51 seats to 49), and any seat that goes to Republicans threatens their chances of retaining the majority.

United States Senate is one of the two houses of the legislature (Congress) in the United States. It was established in 1789, each state in America can elect two senators for six-year terms.

The terms of the Senate membership expire every two years, earning the chamber the nickname “the house that never dies.”
