ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) is set to submit responses to 13 additional appeals regarding the Kurdistan Parliament election results to the Judicial Panel, according to IHEC spokesperson Jumana al-Ghalai.
Speaking to Kurdistan 24 on Monday, al-Ghalai confirmed that "Today we are submitting responses to 13 more appeals from the Kurdistan Parliament elections to the Judicial Panel. Previously, responses to 28 appeals were submitted, bringing the total to 41 appeals."
The spokesperson highlighted that the Judicial Panel has 10 days by law to process the appeals. “Final election results will be certified by the Board of Commissioners after all appeals are resolved,” she stated.
The appeals process began on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2024, following the announcement of preliminary results for the sixth Kurdistan Parliament elections. There has been 41 appeals to the final results of the election by political parties. 25 of the submitted appeals are from Sulaimani, 12 from Erbil, 3 from Duhok and 1 from Halabja.
The Kurdistan Parliament election, held on Oct. 20, 2024, represents a crucial step in the region's democratic process. The appeals process is a standard procedure to ensure election transparency and fairness.
The certification of final results is necessary before the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government can proceed. The concentration of appeals in Sulaimani province reflects the particularly competitive nature of the election in that region.
