Census team in Khurmatu urges displaced families to return for registration

"I hope those who haven't returned yet will do so to avoid being excluded from the census process, as we don't know how the Iraqi government might use this data in the future," Hussein warned.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Displaced families from Kurdistani areas outside the Kurdistan Region's control can temporarily return to their areas to register for the ongoing national census, a census team member in Khurmatu announced on Saturday.

Hussein, a census team worker, told Kurdistan24 that only one family member needs to be physically present with the national ID cards of all family members to complete the registration process.

"It's not necessary for the entire family to be present during the registration," he explained.

The census official emphasized the urgency of registration, noting that the addition of names will only be possible from Nov. 16 to 19, with no extensions available on Nov. 20 and 21.

"I hope those who haven't returned yet will do so to avoid being excluded from the census process, as we don't know how the Iraqi government might use this data in the future," Hussein warned.

Khurmatu, a Kurdistani area outside the KRG control, has witnessed significant demographic changes due to various conflicts. Many Kurdish families were displaced from the area following the events of Oct. 2017.

The current census represents a crucial documentation of the area's population composition, potentially impacting future political and administrative decisions regarding disputed territories.
