ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – In a significant development regarding Turkey's Kurdish issue, former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu expressed support for recent statements by nationalist leader Devlet Bahçeli concerning potential new peace initiatives, during an exclusive interview with Kurdistan24's Farhad Rasool.
Describing Bahçeli's recent statements as "shocking" and "impressive," Davutoğlu noted the particular significance of these comments coming from a nationalist party leader who had previously opposed such processes. "When the previous solution processes started, Devlet Bahçeli, as a nationalist party, he was against this process in the past," he explained.
The former premier emphasized that support from those previously holding extreme positions could facilitate progress. "For a Turkish-origin nationalist, if he defends the rights of the Kurds, and therefore Kurdish nationalists, if he defends the unity of Turkey, that will help the process," he stated.
However, Davutoğlu cautioned that concrete steps and a clear roadmap are necessary.
He specifically called for President Erdogan to declare his position on the initiative, stating, "President Erdogan should declare, because he's the president, he's the one who will run such a process."
The Future Party leader maintained that democratization should not be conditional, asserting, "Democratic rights of Turkish citizens are for everybody. And no, it is not a matter of negotiation."
