ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Late Sunday night, security forces in central Baghdad thwarted an attempted child trafficking case where a mother was planning to sell her child for $80,000 USD, according to a security source.
The source reported that following careful surveillance and investigation, security forces intercepted the woman who was attempting to sell her child. The incident took place at a restaurant on Street 62 in Baghdad's Karrada district, where an accomplice accompanied the mother.
"The mother, five other women, and the potential buyer have all been arrested," the security source added. "They will remain in custody pending completion of legal procedures and appearance before a judge."
Child trafficking remains a serious concern in Iraq, where poverty and social instability can drive desperate measures.
Iraqi law strictly prohibits human trafficking, including the sale of children, with severe penalties for offenders.
The country has strengthened its anti-trafficking measures in recent years, though challenges persist in enforcement and prevention.
