ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - During Tuesday's groundbreaking ceremony for a new drug rehabilitation center, Musa Ahmad, President of the Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF), emphasized the ongoing humanitarian challenges in the Kurdistan Region while announcing a significant advancement in healthcare infrastructure.
"Today marks a proud moment as we lay the foundation stone for this drug rehabilitation center," Ahmad stated during the ceremony. He referenced President Barzani's recent remarks at the MEPS24 conference in Duhok, where the president emphasized that the drug crisis poses an even greater threat than terrorism.
Ahmad declared the BCF's commitment to the cause, stating, "Just as we were President Barzani's Peshmerga, we will be at the forefront of this battle, dedicating all our resources to combat this challenge."
He revealed that the Prime Minister had previously tasked the foundation with participating in this national campaign to establish a scientific and humanitarian approach to drug prevention and treatment.
The BCF president particularly acknowledged the crucial partnership with LDS organization, noting their decade-long collaboration which has resulted in support for 36 other projects besides this center.
However, Ahmad also drew attention to the ongoing refugee situation in the Kurdistan Region: "A significant number of IDPs and refugees remain in the Kurdistan Region, requiring continued support from UN agencies and international organizations."
He explained that while the regional government's ultimate goal is the safe and dignified return of displaced persons to their homes, ongoing support remains crucial.
"Although many organizations have withdrawn their presence, LDS has demonstrated substantial support, particularly in establishing this center," Ahmad added, highlighting the continuing partnership amid changing aid dynamics.
The Kurdistan Region has been a safe haven for hundreds of thousands of displaced persons and refugees since the rise of ISIS in 2014.
While many international organizations have scaled back their operations in recent years, the region continues to host a significant displaced population.
The Barzani Charity Foundation has played a pivotal role in providing humanitarian assistance, while simultaneously expanding its services to address emerging challenges such as drug addiction treatment and prevention.
