ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On Sunday and in a formal statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has given up power and left Syria following negotiations with opposition forces.
In its statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry referred to several serious aspects of the emerging situation in Syria.
The Ministry maintained that communication with Syrian opposition forces is continuing and stressed the significance of respecting the diverse religious and ethnic elements within Syria.
Moscow expressed its support for an all-encompassing political process that aligns with UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which was unanimously adopted.
This stance reveals Russia's pledge to internationally recognized frameworks for conflict resolution in Syria.
Concerning security matters, the Ministry noted the status of Russian military presence in Syria, stating that these facilities remain secure and fully operational, with no significant security concerns.
This comes after a noteworthy military campaign by Syrian opposition forces, led by Ahmed Jolani the commander of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which began on Nov. 27, 2024.
The opposition's movements advanced steadily through main Syrian cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, Sweida, and Quneitra, culminating in the capture of Homs and Damascus early Sunday morning, successfully bringing about an end to Assad's 24-year rule.
The Russian statement signifies an important political shift in the Syrian conflict, possibly indicating the start of a new chapter in Syria's political development and regional dynamics.
