ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – A reliable source of Iraqi delegation members who met with the Syrian transitional government officials on Thursday announced that they stressed the need to protect the borders and coordinate between the two sides to prevent the return of ISIS as well as guard Syria's prisons containing ISIS fighters during their meeting with the new Syrian administration.

The source also added that the Iraqi delegation asked the new Syrian authorities to protect and respect communities and religious sites. In return, the Syrian authorities reaffirmed their willingness not to violate communities’ rights.

Earlier today Iraqi government spokesperson Bassem al-Awadi told Kurdistan24 that an Iraqi delegation led by Hamid Rashid al-Shatri, the head of the Iraqi National Intelligence Service, visited Damascus.

The spokesperson added that the Iraqi delegation met with Ahmed al-Sharaa, commander-in-chief of the new Syrian administration, at the Presidential Palace.

This is the first visit by an Iraqi delegation to Syria since the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
