ERBIL (Kurdistan24)—The Politburo of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has applauded the Iraqi Parliament's approval of the law repealing decisions made by the dissolved Ba'ath Party, defining it as a necessary and significant step toward justice and reconciliation.
The KDP also called on the federal government to take immediate action to implement the law.
Historic Repeal of Ba'athist Decisions
The Politburo of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) issued a statement on Wednesday following the Iraqi Parliament's vote to approve the law repealing Ba'ath Party decisions that led to the confiscation of lands.
The legislation opens the door for returning these lands to their original owners, primarily Kurds and Turkmen in Kirkuk and other territories.
The KDP labeled the move as “an important and necessary step” in addressing decades of injustice committed under Saddam Hussein’s regime.
Recognition and Appreciation
The statement extended appreciation to KDP representatives and Kurdish parliamentary blocs in the Iraqi Parliament for their efforts in passing the legislation.
The KDP also recognized the contributions of other political forces and parties that backed the draft law, acknowledging their commitment to justice and reconciliation.
"We hope this step will deepen the spirit of mutual acceptance, peaceful coexistence, and strengthen the foundations of building the new Iraq," the statement read.
Call for Swift Implementation
While celebrating the parliamentary decision, the KDP underlined the Significance of its immediate and effective implementation.
"We expect the federal government and relevant institutions not to show reluctance and to take the necessary measures to enforce this law," the Politburo urged.
Restoring Rights and Addressing Injustice
The repeal of Ba'ath Party decisions marks a crucial step in rectifying the Arabization policies of the former regime, which saw Kurdish and Turkmen lands seized and redistributed as part of attempts to change the demographic makeup of Kirkuk and other areas.
The KDP highlighted that this move is not just about land restitution but also about nurturing national reconciliation and rebuilding trust among Iraq's diverse communities.
The Politburo emphasized that such measures are central for the spirit of coexistence and equality, serving as a keystone for building a democratic and inclusive Iraq.
