ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Geir Pedersen, the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, emphasized the necessity of a peaceful resolution to the situation in northeastern Syria during a press conference in Damascus on Wednesday.
Pedersen called for an inclusive national dialogue that represents all components of the Syrian population, describing it as a critical step toward resolving the country’s ongoing challenges.
The Special Envoy reiterated the UN’s support for fostering a conducive environment for such dialogue, stressing the importance of Syrian-led efforts to determine the nation’s future. “The United Nations stands ready to assist in facilitating a stable and viable process that brings together all Syrian stakeholders,” Pedersen stated.
Pedersen confirmed ongoing discussions with various Syrian components, including Ahmed al-Sharaa, the head of the new Syrian administration, and Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). He described these meetings as positive steps toward addressing the concerns of the Kurdish population and resolving the situation in northeastern Syria through peaceful means.
The Special Envoy underlined the pivotal roles of the United States and Turkey in mediating between the new Syrian administration and the SDF, urging both nations to act as neutral brokers to foster constructive dialogue.
Expressing optimism, Pedersen praised the Syrian leadership’s commitment to dialogue over violence. “I welcome the new administration’s rejection of retaliatory policies,” he said, acknowledging the significant challenges ahead for the interim government in navigating a complex political and security landscape.
