UN Special Envoy Pedersen Outlines Crucial Steps for Syria's Political Transition at Security Council Briefing
Pedersen emphasized the importance of dialogue between the caretaker authorities and groups like the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir O. Pedersen, presented a comprehensive briefing to the UN Security Council on Wednesday, discussing the pressing need for a strategic approach to Syria's political transition following the recent collapse of the former regime.
Pedersen outlined a series of critical issues facing Syria as it seeks to establish a stable, inclusive government and address ongoing humanitarian and security challenges.
In his address, Pedersen highlighted the formation of caretaker authorities largely composed of figures from the former Idlib Government, noting the initial steps taken to consolidate power and stabilize the region. These steps include military appointments and engagements with various Syrian factions and international leaders, aimed at structuring a unified defense ministry. However, the envoy also reported signs of instability and violence within areas under caretaker control, stressing the urgent need for robust governance to prevent further abuses and ensure law and order.

Pedersen's briefing raised significant concerns about areas in Syria still outside the caretaker authorities’ control, including ongoing clashes and military actions that threaten Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized the importance of dialogue between the caretaker authorities and groups like the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and expressed concern over continued Israeli military activities and violations of Syrian sovereignty.
On the humanitarian front, Pedersen called attention to the dire needs of the Syrian population, who continue to suffer from lack of access to essential services like healthcare, water, and electricity. The challenges of returning internally displaced persons and refugees to their homes were underscored, with the need for a comprehensive approach to rebuilding and mine clearance.
The envoy stressed the importance of a clear, inclusive political transition process. He noted positive developments such as national dialogue initiatives and plans for constitutional reform and elections. However, he also pointed out the lack of transparency and inclusive participation in these processes, urging the caretaker authorities to ensure that the transition reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of all Syrian communities.
As Syria navigates these complex challenges, Pedersen affirmed the UN's readiness to support the country's path to recovery, emphasizing the need for international cooperation to lift sanctions and provide necessary economic support. The envoy’s call for justice, accountability, and the active engagement of Syrian women in the political process highlighted the broad spectrum of issues that must be addressed to achieve sustainable peace and stability in Syria.
Pedersen concluded his briefing with a commitment to continue working closely with the caretaker authorities and all Syrian stakeholders to facilitate a credible and inclusive transition, hoping to return to Damascus soon to further these efforts. The UN Special Envoy's report serves as a crucial blueprint for international efforts to assist Syria during this pivotal time.
