ERBIL (Kurdistn24) – In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia at the Davos Economic Forum, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid addressed Iraq’s response to major regional changes, internal challenges, and efforts to attract global investment amid shifting dynamics in the Middle East.

Responding to Regional Changes

Iraqi President Rashid emphasized Iraq’s approach to managing regional political changes, including the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria and Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Rashid expressed hope that these transformations would lead to greater peace and stability for the region's peoples.

"Our hope and goal is that changes in the region will be positive for the benefit of its people," Rashid stated, stressing Iraq’s desire for U.S. policies to de-escalate tensions and contribute to resolving regional conflicts.

He pointed to President Trump’s previous statements on peace as a source of optimism for Iraq’s regional aspirations.

Security Concerns on the Syrian Border

Rashid voiced concerns about terrorist groups taking advantage of security gaps along the Iraqi-Syrian border, following the rapid regime change in Syria.

"We have taken serious security measures to ensure border stability," he confirmed, underscoring Iraq’s proactive efforts to prevent cross-border threats.

The President also revealed Iraq’s mediation efforts between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syria’s new administration, highlighting Iraq’s commitment to promoting regional stability while maintaining its sovereignty.

Strengthening Sovereignty and Addressing Armed Factions

In internal matters, President Rashid reaffirmed Iraq’s independence from foreign intervention and the government's emphasis on stability.

He talked about the Iraqi government’s success in disarming most armed factions and integrating them into the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) under parliamentary law.

He confirmed that their military activities have ceased, marking progress toward enhancing internal security.

Relations with the Kurdistan Region

President Rashid recognized progress in Baghdad-Erbil relations while noting challenges like disputes over oil management.

He underlined the urgency of passing an oil and gas law to resolve these issues, advocating for collaboration and dialogue between Iraq’s central and regional governments.

Economic Growth and Global Investment

On the economic front, Rashid expressed optimism about Iraq’s growing appeal to foreign investors due to enhanced security and stability.

He highlighted interest from global companies in Arab and Western countries, as well as China, Britain, and the U.S.

Iraq’s emphasis on infrastructure development and service improvements has been decisive to attracting this investment.

"Our goal is to develop the national economy across all sectors," Rashid stated, stressing Iraq’s potential to emerge as a regional economic hub.

Supporting Democratic Aspirations in Syria

Turning to Syria, Rashid reaffirmed Iraq’s support for the aspirations of the Syrian people, advocating for a democratic system that ensures equal participation for all societal components.

He emphasized that Iraq remains committed to fostering peace and stability while learning from past experiences to address future challenges.
