ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Turkish warplanes conducted a series of airstrikes on several locations near Galala village in the Mawat district of Sulaimani province on Thursday morning. The airstrikes were aimed at fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the EU, and the US.

PKK militants are known to operate in the region, prompting these military actions.

Kurdistan counter terrorism (KCT) confirmed that the strikes resulted in the death of 3 PKK militants including one senior official, with two others still reported missing.

The attacks took place between 10:45 and 11:00 AM local time in the nearby village of Galala.

Kamaran Othman, a member of the American Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) in Kurdistan, noted that due to heavy snowfall and the challenging terrain it remains difficult to fully assess the extent of the damage caused by the strikes.

The ongoing presence of the PKK in the Kurdistan Region has led to significant displacement among local Kurdish communities. For years, PKK militants have occupied villages, homes, orchards, and farmlands, forcing residents to flee and disrupting their livelihoods. This occupation has turned once-thriving rural areas into conflict zones, leaving many families unable to return to their ancestral lands.

The PKK’s activities in the region have also drawn continuous Turkish military operations, with Ankara justifying its cross-border bombardments as necessary to eliminate PKK strongholds. As a result, Kurdish civilians find themselves caught in the middle of a conflict not of their making, suffering the consequences of both PKK occupation and Turkish airstrikes.
