ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Russian Foreign Ministry has reiterated its position on the Kurdish issue in Syria, emphasizing that it considers the matter an internal affair of the Syrian Arab Republic and stressing the importance of national consensus in any structural state decisions.
On Friday, in response to a question from Kurdistan24 reporter Khoshawi Mohammed, the Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirmed its long-standing stance, stating that its views on the issue remain unchanged.
"Russia's position has been stated multiple times, and we see no reason to revise our fundamental views," the Ministry noted.
Moscow underscored that sustainable stability in Syria and conditions for post-conflict recovery can only be achieved through a comprehensive political process, in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
This framework, according to Russian officials, necessitates the participation of all key political forces and ethnic groups, including the Kurds, in shaping Syria’s future.
"We proceed from the necessity of strict adherence to the principles of Syrian unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," the statement added, reinforcing Russia’s commitment to preserving the current borders and governance framework of Syria.
Regarding a Kurdish region in Syria, the Foreign Ministry further stressed that decisions related to governance structures must be made by Syrians themselves, without external pressure.
"We are certain this sensitive issue is an internal matter of the Syrian Arab Republic. We believe decisions concerning important state structures must be made without external 'encouragement' and based on national consensus," the Ministry declared.
Russia has consistently advocated for a diplomatic resolution to Syria’s complex political landscape and has expressed skepticism toward international interventions that could alter the country’s internal dynamics.
With growing tensions over the future of Kurdish-administered areas in northern Syria, Moscow’s reaffirmation of its stance signals its ongoing support for Damascus in maintaining territorial sovereignty and political control.
The response highlights Russia’s broader strategic interests in Syria, where it has been a key ally of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
As discussions continue on the Kurdish question and Syria’s political future, Moscow’s insistence on a Syrian-led solution remains a critical element in the evolving regional dynamics.
Additionally, the Russian Foreign Ministry has underscored the necessity of ensuring the rights of ethnic minorities, particularly the Kurds and Druze, in Syria’s post-conflict political structure.
Addressing reporters during a press conference, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Maria Zakharova emphasized that while Syria’s future must be determined by its people, the inclusion and protection of minority groups are crucial.
