German Chancellor Pledges Support for 'Free, Secure Syria'

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) –Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting a “free and secure Syria for all its people” during a phone call with Syria’s interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa on Friday.
The call, which lasted nearly an hour, focused on the necessity of launching an inclusive political process to shape Syria’s future, according to a statement from the German Chancellery.

European Support for Syria’s Sovereignty and Kurdish Safety
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart Jean-Noël Barrot jointly urged Syria’s neighboring countries to “respect Syria’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.” They stressed that ensuring the safety of Syria’s Kurdish population is essential for long-term peace in the country.
Baerbock further emphasized that achieving lasting stability requires de-escalation in northern Syria, where clashes persist between Kurdish forces and Turkish-backed factions.
She also called for integrating Kurdish military units into Syria’s security structure as part of a broader reconciliation framework.
Her remarks followed high-level meetings in Damascus, marking a significant moment in Europe’s diplomatic engagement with Syria’s evolving political landscape.
The International Community and it’s relation with the Kurds
Jadaan Ali, head of the Syrian Kurdish National Council (KNCS) representation in the Kurdistan Region), commented on the international discussions surrounding Syria, stating, “Throughout history, the Kurds' relationship with the international community has never been stronger than it is today. As it reaches its peak, we face growing pressure to achieve unity among Kurds and actively engage with the new Syrian administration.
