Kurdistan Region President, EU Chief Discuss Security, Cooperation

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani held a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday, as part of his engagements at the Munich Security Conference.

Their discussions focused on strengthening relations between the Kurdistan Region and the European Union, expanding cooperation, and addressing key regional security issues.

Strengthening EU-Kurdistan Relations

Kurdistan Region President Barzani expressed his appreciation for the European Union’s continued support for the Kurdistan Region, particularly in areas of development, humanitarian aid, and security cooperation.

He emphasized the importance of deepening ties across all sectors, reinforcing joint initiatives between the EU, the Kurdistan Region, an Iraq.

Von der Leyen reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting stability in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

She praised the Kurdistan Region for its proactive role in fostering regional security and economic growth, noting its strategic importance as a partner of the European Union.

Discussion on Regional Security and Syria

A key focus of the meeting was the ongoing situation in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Syria.

Von der Leyen highlighted the significance of Kurdistan Region President Barzani’s perspectives on developments in Syria, emphasizing the EU’s interest in ensuring long-term stability in the region.

Both leaders agreed on the need for sustained international engagement in Syria to prevent further instability and humanitarian crises.

Recognition of the Kurdistan Region’s Role in the Fight Against ISIS

Von der Leyen commended the Kurdistan Region’s efforts in counterterrorism, particularly the role of the Peshmerga forces in combating and defeating ISIS.

She emphasized the importance of continued cooperation in countering extremist threats and ensuring that gains made against ISIS are preserved.

The European Commission president also acknowledged the crucial role played by women in the fight against ISIS and broader counter-terrorism efforts, highlighting the need to enhance women’s participation in peace and security initiatives.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation on political, economic, and security matters.
