President Nechirvan Barzani and Turkish FM Discuss Regional Stability and Strengthening Ties at MSC

President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s strategic position as a key player in promoting stability and economic cooperation amid regional complex and geopolitical challenges.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference 2025, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday to discuss key regional issues, security cooperation, and economic partnerships.

Kurdistan Region’s Expanding Diplomatic and Strategic Role

The meeting focused on enhancing political, economic, and security relations between Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and Türkiye. President Barzani reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s strategic position as a key player in promoting stability and economic cooperation in the region. He highlighted the Kurdistan Region’s efforts in fostering regional dialogue, strengthening economic ties, and maintaining security amid complex geopolitical challenges.

President Barzani also underscored the Kurdistan Region’s crucial role in regional counterterrorism efforts, facilitating international cooperation, and acting as a bridge between Iraq, Türkiye, and the broader region. Its leadership in these areas has positioned the Kurdistan Region as a pivotal force in regional diplomacy and economic development.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

Minister Fidan expressed Türkiye’s commitment to deepening engagement with both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, recognizing the Kurdistan Region’s role in ensuring regional stability. Discussions also covered security challenges, economic collaboration, and the evolving political landscape in Iraq and Syria. Both sides emphasized the importance of sustained cooperation to tackle security threats and support long-term stability in the region.

Regional Developments and Security Priorities

The meeting also addressed developments in Syria and broader geopolitical dynamics. Both leaders agreed on the necessity of dialogue and cooperation to address regional security challenges and advance mutual economic interests.

Following the meeting, President Barzani wrote on his personal X account: “It was a pleasure meeting my friend Hakan Fidan to discuss recent regional developments. We exchanged views on enhancing Iraq and Kurdistan Region’s ties with Türkiye and explored ways to strengthen regional stability.”

As the Kurdistan Region continues to assert itself as a key player in regional diplomacy, its leadership in fostering security, economic growth, and international cooperation remains vital to the broader Middle East’s stability and prosperity.
