Sri Lankan tea in high demand in the Kurdistan Region
Jalal revealed to Kurdistan24 on Wednesday that a significant portion of Sri Lanka’s tea exports make their way to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region each year.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Region has become a key market for Sri Lankan tea, with demand continuing to rise. According to Ahmed Jalal, the Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Erbil, an impressive 90% of the tea imported to the region meets high-quality standards.
Jalal revealed to Kurdistan24 on Wednesday that a significant portion of Sri Lanka’s tea exports make their way to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region each year. Remarkably, 65% of tea traders importing from Sri Lanka are based in the Kurdistan Region, making it a crucial hub for tea distribution across Iraq.
“Sri Lankan tea is renowned for its rich aroma and superior quality,” Jalal stated. “While 90% of the imported tea is classified as good, the remaining 10% is of even higher quality.”
The premium nature of Sri Lankan tea is reflected in its value, with high-quality varieties exceeding $500 per kilogram.
Beyond tea, Sri Lanka also exports a range of other products to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly cosmetics, further strengthening trade ties between the two regions.
