PM Barzani, French Ambassador Discuss Government Formation, Oil Exports
Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that "a positive atmosphere and good mutual understanding prevails," expressing hope for the swift formation of a strong and unified government in the near future.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with French Ambassador to Iraq Patrick Durel on Monday to discuss key political and economic issues, including the formation of the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet and the challenges surrounding Kurdistan’s oil exports. The meeting, which took place in Erbil, reflects France’s continued diplomatic engagement with the Kurdistan Region.
During their discussions, both sides reviewed the broader political landscape in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
Prime Minister Barzani emphasized that "a positive atmosphere and good mutual understanding prevails," expressing hope for the swift formation of a strong and unified government in the near future. The political transition in Kurdistan has been closely watched by regional and international partners, with France maintaining a particular interest in ensuring the stability of its key allies in Iraq.
The conversation also touched on economic challenges, particularly the obstacles hindering Kurdistan’s oil exports.
The prolonged suspension of oil shipments via Turkey’s Ceyhan Port has created financial strains for the Kurdistan Region, impacting its ability to sustain essential public services.
The Prime Minister and the French Ambassador discussed ongoing negotiations aimed at resolving the export deadlock and securing Kurdistan’s rightful share of the Iraqi budget. Ensuring that the constitutional rights of the Kurdistan Region are upheld remains a priority for the KRG, as disputes over revenue-sharing and oil exports continue to shape relations between Erbil and Baghdad.
The meeting was also attended by Yann Braem, Consul General of France to the Kurdistan Region, underscoring France’s diplomatic presence and long-term commitment to supporting economic and political development in Kurdistan. France has consistently advocated for dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad to find sustainable solutions to ongoing disputes, including issues of governance, resource management, and security cooperation.
As the Kurdistan Region moves toward forming its new government, maintaining strong international partnerships remains crucial. France’s diplomatic backing, along with its strategic interest in Iraq’s stability, is expected to play a key role in supporting political and economic progress in the region. The discussions between PM Barzani and Amb. Durel highlight the importance of fostering international cooperation to navigate the challenges facing Kurdistan and ensuring that its constitutional status and economic interests are safeguarded.
