Iraqi Parliament Moves Forward with Halabja's Provincialization

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – In a significant step toward elevating Halabja's status, Shakhawan Abdullah, Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, announced that the bill for the provincialization of Halabja will soon be placed on the parliamentary agenda.

On Monday, Abdullah confirmed that he had secured approval from both the Speaker of Parliament and the First Deputy Speaker, clearing the way for a vote on the bill. This marks a major milestone for Halabja, a city that has long awaited this change.

Abdullah expressed that this decision aligns with the commitment made to the people of Halabja and is in response to a request from President Barzani to the parliament’s leadership. "This effort fulfills a promise made to the representatives and leaders of Halabja, and we have worked closely with various parliamentary factions to ensure the bill’s passage," Abdullah said.

The move is seen as a long-awaited victory for Halabja and a step forward in recognizing the city's growing importance in Iraq.
