ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The newly formed Syrian government is set to be announced on Saturday, according to reports from the Syrian newspaper Al-Watan. The appointment of a new Grand Mufti and the re-establishment of the Council of Iftaa are expected to be finalized a day earlier, on Friday.
The announcement comes three months after the ousting of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who was removed from power following a 14-year-long conflict. On March 15, the interim authorities ratified a constitutional declaration outlining a five-year transitional period, during which interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa will oversee the country’s executive affairs.
From Armed Conflict to Political Transition
Assad’s removal was triggered by an offensive led by opposition factions, spearheaded by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which entered Damascus on Dec, 8, 2024. The attack originated from northwest Syria, an opposition stronghold, and escalated in late November, culminating in the regime's collapse.
Following the power shift, the new authorities established a caretaker government tasked with managing state affairs for a three-month period. While an interim government was originally scheduled to be formed earlier this month, the announcement was delayed due to extended consultations among political factions.
Transitional Leadership and Future Plans
Ahmad al-Sharaa, who was declared interim president on January 29, pledged to issue a constitutional declaration that would guide the transition phase. He also committed to forming a preparatory committee to select a smaller legislative council, effectively dissolving the previous parliament.
The upcoming government announcement is expected to set the course for the country’s political and administrative restructuring, shaping its post-Assad era.
