Erbil (Kurdistan24) – Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, Masrour Barzani, stated on Wednesday, that discussions between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) regarding the formation of the new regional cabinet are progressing smoothly. He emphasized the importance of swift government formation, noting that the timeline depends on the readiness of all political parties to participate constructively.

Speaking to reporters after participating in a policy forum at the ninth Sulaimani Forum 2025, PM Barzani said: “We are keen on forming the new Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) cabinet as soon as possible, but it largely hinges on the willingness of other sides to engage.” He reiterated that the Kurdistan Parliament belongs to the people and “does not fall under the ownership of any party or group that could justify its dissolution.”

The Prime minister further underlined that the KDP–PUK relations are on solid footing, describing recent meetings as “positive and ongoing.” He added that both parties are working toward reaching a common vision for the next cabinet, with recent meetings reflecting mutual goodwill and shared intent.

Touching on the “My Account” project—an initiative aimed at increasing transparency and modernizing salary disbursements for public sector employees—Barzani dismissed objections to the program as lacking substance. “Those who oppose -My Account- project are doing so based on private political motives,” he said, signaling that the initiative remains a key part of his administration’s governance reforms.

In this context, a high-level meeting between the KDP and PUK delegations is scheduled for Thursday morning, April 17, at the PUK political bureau in Sulaimani. The session will continue discussions that began earlier this week in Pirmam, where the two sides reviewed strategic issues tied to cabinet formation and ministerial appointments.

A joint statement issued following the Pirmam meeting described the atmosphere as “cordial and constructive,” with both parties agreeing on foundational principles to ensure an inclusive and capable cabinet.

Tomorrow’s meeting is widely anticipated to be a decisive step in advancing the political consensus between the KDP and PUK. Observers expect the dialogue to accelerate government formation and pave the way for broader institutional stability across the Kurdistan Region.
