ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — President Masoud Barzani has welcomed recent developments in the peace process in Türkiye, particularly the decision by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) to dissolve its organization and end its decades-long armed campaign.
In a statement issued on Monday, President Barzani described the moment as a potentially transformative step for peace and regional stability.
In a message released by the Barzani Headquarters, the Kurdish leader praised the progress made: "It is pleasing that in the peace resolution process in Türkiye, the parties have taken good positions and positive steps have been taken toward a peaceful solution."
The statement follows the PKK’s announcement of its self-dissolution during its 12th Congress, held from May 5 to 7, under the guidance of its imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan. The congress concluded with a decision to formally dismantle the PKK's organizational structure and end its armed operations. This development has been met with both cautious optimism and intense scrutiny across the region.
President Barzani noted the significance of the PKK’s internal decisions, stating: "Additionally, the PKK held its congress and issued a series of decisions. We hope that this process reaches a good outcome and benefits the region and all parties."
President Barzani emphasized the broader importance of supporting the momentum toward peace, stating, "We also declare that we support the success of this process in every way."
The remarks come amid a surge in diplomatic attention surrounding the Kurdish question in Türkiye, following the PKK’s landmark announcement. With over four decades of conflict and tens of thousands of lives lost, many view the group’s dissolution as a potential turning point.
President Barzani's comments signal both encouragement and a call for constructive engagement among all stakeholders, from Ankara to Kurdish political actors, in ensuring that the transition leads to lasting peace rather than renewed uncertainty.
As regional and international observers closely monitor developments, the President's message underscores the pivotal role of responsible leadership and mutual goodwill in steering the post-conflict period. His affirmation of support adds moral and political weight from one of the most prominent figures in Kurdish politics, especially at a time when the future of Kurdish-Turkish relations may be entering a historic new phase.
President Barzani has long advocated for peaceful and negotiated solutions to regional conflicts, and his message aligns with that legacy. The coming weeks are expected to test the resilience and sincerity of all parties involved as they navigate one of the most significant openings for peace in recent Turkish history.
