ERBIL (Kurdistan 24)—Mazloum Abdi, commander-in-chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), praised the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) on Monday for its decision to dissolve its organizational structure, abandon armed struggle, and embrace a democratic political path.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Abdi described the PKK's move as “commendable” and expressed optimism that the shift would usher in a new era of peace and political engagement across the Middle East.
“The PKK's decision to dissolve its organizational structure, end the armed struggle, and adopt a democratic policy based on the call of Leader Abdullah Ocalan is commendable,” he wrote.
Abdi acknowledged the PKK’s historical role in the region, saying it had played a “significant” part in shaping developments in the Middle East. He voiced confidence that the decision would create momentum for a more peaceful and democratic future.
“We are confident that this step will pave the way for a new phase of politics and peace in the region,” Abdi added, calling on all stakeholders to take “meaningful steps” and offer “the necessary support” to ensure the transition’s success.
On Monday, the PKK formally announced the end of its armed struggle, closing a chapter in one of the Middle East’s most entrenched conflicts. The decision marks a critical opportunity for political actors in Turkey to prioritize democratic dialogue and national unity in the period ahead.
