ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Pakistani army announced on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, that 40 civilians and 11 soldiers were killed in the latest round of deadly clashes with India, marking one of the most intense escalations in recent years.
The conflict was sparked by a deadly attack on the Indian-controlled side of Kashmir that killed 26 tourists, most of whom were Hindu men. New Delhi blamed the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba — designated as a terrorist organization by the United Nations — for orchestrating the assault.
While India pointed the finger at Islamabad, the Pakistani government denied any involvement and called for an independent investigation into the incident.
The recent violence adds to a long history of conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, who have fought multiple wars over the disputed Muslim-majority region of Kashmir since their independence from British rule in 1947. Both countries claim the region in full but govern separate parts of it.
Unlike previous clashes largely confined to the heavily militarized Line of Control in Kashmir, this latest round of fighting saw India targeting cities deep within Pakistani territory, signaling a dangerous new phase in the ongoing hostilities.
