ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Wednesday extended his congratulations to South Korean President-elect Lee Jae-myung following his election victory, expressing a commitment to bolstering bilateral relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Republic of Korea.

“Congratulations Lee Jae-myung on your election as President of the Republic of Korea,” Barzani wrote in a post on X. “I look forward to strengthening the partnership between our governments and deepening the longstanding friendship between our peoples.”

The congratulatory message highlights the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) continued focus on international engagement and fostering diplomatic and economic ties with global partners. South Korea has played a notable role in the Kurdistan Region, contributing through humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges.

Barzani’s remarks come as the KRG seeks to expand its international partnerships beyond traditional alliances, emphasizing trade, investment, and technological cooperation. His message underscores the strategic importance of building on the existing goodwill between Erbil and Seoul.

President-elect Lee Jae-myung, a member of South Korea’s Democratic Party, is expected to take office with a policy platform that includes regional cooperation and innovation-driven economic growth—priorities that align with the KRG’s aspirations to modernize its economy and strengthen its institutional capacity.

Barzani’s outreach reflects Erbil’s proactive diplomatic posture and readiness to deepen engagement with Asian democracies, particularly those with a track record of constructive involvement in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
