ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Israeli fighter jets launched airstrikes late Saturday night targeting Tehran, with direct hits reported on Mehrabad International Airport, one of Iran’s busiest and most strategically significant air hubs.
According to a breaking report by Agence France-Presse (AFP), several powerful explosions were heard in and around the airport shortly after Israeli warplanes entered Iranian airspace. Eyewitnesses confirmed that multiple fires broke out across the airport grounds following the strikes, with thick columns of smoke rising into the night sky.
The local ISNA news agency shared a video showing columns of heavy smoke rising from the area of the airport in western Tehran while Mehr news agency reported a "blast" there.
The assault on Mehrabad Airport represents a major escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Iran. The airfield, located in western Tehran, serves both civilian and military purposes and is considered a key logistical node for the Iranian regime.
There were no immediate reports of casualties, and Iranian authorities have not yet issued a formal response.
Since early Friday morning, the Israeli Air Force has carried out multiple strikes on Tehran and several other cities in Iran.
As a result of these attacks, for nearly 24 consecutive hours, all air traffic at Iran’s airports has been suspended. The Iranian Civil Aviation Authority has issued a statement, announcing: “We inform all Iranian citizens that, in order to protect lives and ensure the safety of passengers, all flights from all airports are suspended for an indefinite period.”
