U.S. Soldier Dies in Erbil in Non-Combat Incident, Pentagon Confirms

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The U.S. Department of Defense on Wednesday identified Staff Sgt. Saul Fabian Gonzalez, 26, of Pullman, Michigan, as the American soldier who died on June 17, 2025, in Erbil, Iraq, while supporting Operation Inherent Resolve.

According to the Pentagon statement, the fatality resulted from a non-combat related incident, which remains under official investigation.

Staff Sgt. Gonzalez was assigned to D Troop, 2nd Squadron, 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

No further details have been released pending the outcome of the investigation.
