KRG Condemns Continued Rocket and Drone Attacks, Criticizes Iraqi Government Silence

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Saturday strongly criticized the federal Iraqi authorities for what it described as a persistent failure to take responsibility for a series of drone and rocket attacks targeting cities in the Kurdistan Region, launched by militias operating from Iraqi territory.
In a statement, the KRG Ministry of Interior expressed disappointment over what it called a “pattern of evasion and cover-up” by the relevant authorities in Baghdad, despite repeated coordination efforts and the existence of clear evidence identifying the sources of the attacks. The statement comes after renewed assaults on Kurdish cities, escalating regional tensions, and raising concerns over civilian safety and territorial integrity.
“While expectations remain that the federal authorities will respond appropriately to threats against the Kurdistan Region—or any part of Iraq—by uncovering the truth, preventing future attacks, and holding perpetrators accountable, we regret to observe instead a trend of denial and withdrawal from responsibility,” the KRG statement said.
The Interior Ministry noted that over the past years, the Kurdistan Region has endured more than ten separate drone and rocket attacks. Despite the clear identification of the launching sources and multiple joint investigative committees formed between Erbil and Baghdad, no findings have been made public, no perpetrators have been punished, and no official steps have been taken to prevent recurrence.

The KRG reaffirmed that political disputes and divergent viewpoints among parties should never compromise the basic duty of the state: to protect its citizens and uphold national sovereignty. “Safeguarding the lives of civilians, national stability, and the integrity of the country is a fundamental responsibility of both the Federal Government of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government,” the statement said.
The Iraqi Ministry of Interior issued a statement earlier on Saturday rejecting what it called “unacceptable and baseless accusations” from the KRG. The ministry denied any involvement by federal security institutions in the attacks and demanded that the Kurdistan Region present concrete evidence through official channels rather than through public statements and media reports.
“The current challenges require cooperation and coordination through official frameworks—not media outlets—so as not to harm the reputation of Iraqi institutions or provide pretexts for hostile actors to exploit,” said Sabah al-Naaman, spokesperson for Iraq’s Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The Kurdistan Region has long stood as a beacon of relative stability, coexistence, and democratic governance within Iraq, despite enduring decades of conflict, genocide, and marginalization. Its commitment to peace, reconstruction, and cooperation with Baghdad has remained firm, even in the face of repeated violations of its security and sovereignty. As the Region continues to play a vital role in maintaining Iraq’s unity and regional balance, the safety of its citizens and the respect for its constitutional rights must be a national priority—one that demands firm action, not political avoidance.
