The discussions covered the current political and security situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad relations, the reform and unification process of the Peshmerga forces, and the ongoing threat posed by ISIS and extremist activity across both Iraq and Syria.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani and General Kevin Leahy, Commander of the Global Coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, reaffirmed on Monday that the Islamic State (ISIS) continues to pose a serious and ongoing threat to the stability and security of Iraq and Syria.
The high-level meeting, held in Erbil, brought together President Barzani, General Leahy, and a delegation of Coalition officials. According to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency, the session also included the presence of the Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Peshmerga Affairs, the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces, and the U.S. Consul General in Erbil.
The discussions covered a wide range of pressing issues, including the current political and security situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad relations, the reform and unification process of the Peshmerga forces, and the ongoing threat posed by ISIS and extremist activity across both Iraq and Syria.
Both sides agreed that ISIS remains a credible and persistent danger and emphasized the critical need for continued coordination and joint efforts between Iraqi and Peshmerga forces and the international coalition to counter the terrorist organization.
President Barzani expressed his deep appreciation for the Global Coalition’s ongoing role in supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in the fight against terrorism. He also praised General Leahy’s efforts in backing the Peshmerga reform process and expressed hope for continued success in their collaborative mission.
The meeting also addressed the broader regional context, including recent developments in Syria, the Kurdish issue, and the impact of ongoing events in the region on Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The importance of preserving peace and stability in the Middle East, especially in northeastern Syria, was underscored, along with several other shared concerns that were explored in depth during the talks.
In the early hours of the same day, a security incident underscored the continued threat of instability in the region. At approximately 2:20 a.m. on Monday, a drone carrying explosives was intercepted and neutralized near Erbil International Airport (EIA), according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region’s Directorate General of Counter-Terrorism (CTD).
Authorities confirmed that the device was brought down before reaching its intended target, with no casualties or material damage reported. The swift response prevented any harm, but the incident served as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges facing the Kurdistan Region.
