Kurdistan Democratic Party Calls on Baghdad to Take Decisive Action After Wave of Drone Strikes on Kurdistan Region

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) parliamentary bloc on Thursday, issued a firm call on the federal government to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities by taking decisive action to halt the escalating drone attacks targeting critical infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region. The appeal comes amid a concerning surge in aerial assaults on oil fields and energy installations, threatening Iraq’s sovereignty, economic lifelines, and regional stability.

Escalating Drone Strikes Target Key Energy Sites

Over the past several days, the Kurdistan Region has witnessed a series of drone attacks that have severely disrupted vital infrastructure. According to the Kurdistan Region's Counter-Terrorism Directorate, a drone carrying explosives crashed in the village of Jezhnikan in the Bahirka district of Erbil on Thursday. The incident caused no casualties or material damage.

However, earlier attacks had more serious repercussions. On Wednesday evening, a bomb-laden drone targeted the Hunt Oil field in the Baadre subdistrict of Duhok province at 7:10 p.m.—marking the second such strike on the same site within days. The Ministry of Natural Resources confirmed that the attack caused material damage but no injuries.

The ministry condemned the repeated assaults, labeling them as “terrorist operations,” and warned that they pose a significant threat to the safety of civilians and energy workers in the region. It called on both the Iraqi federal government and the international community to act urgently to protect energy infrastructure and prevent further attacks.

Parliamentary Bloc Demands Emergency Session and Accountability

In an official statement, the KDP bloc stressed that these assaults—amid continuing economic pressure on the Kurdistan Region—constitute a severe escalation that undermines Iraq’s sovereignty and endangers its internal peace. The statement read:
“These attacks clearly demonstrate that the perpetrators are disconnected from any sense of national responsibility. They pursue dubious agendas at the expense of the Iraqi people’s unity and well-being.”

The KDP bloc urged the federal government to “uncover the perpetrators and bring them to justice,” and emphasized the need for a special parliamentary session to address the situation and review the government's actions.

Multiple Attacks in Erbil, Duhok, and Zakho Affect Oil Output

The scope of the recent drone campaign has expanded rapidly. According to the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, at 7:14 a.m. Wednesday, the Hunt Oil field in Baadre came under a separate drone attack earlier the same day. This was part of a broader pattern of assaults.

Between 6:00 and 6:15 a.m., two drones targeted the DNO oil field in the Fishkhabour area within Zakho's independent administration. A third drone struck the DNO field in the Tawkê area of Zakho at 7:00 a.m. All attacks resulted in material damage only, but significantly disrupted oil production operations.

The Ministry of Natural Resources warned that these drone attacks, which also recently targeted facilities in Khormala, Sarsing, Fishkhabour, and Ayn Sifni in Erbil and Duhok provinces, had already caused “significant material losses” and disrupted output in multiple oil fields.

Urgent Appeal to Baghdad and International Community

The KDP's call adds to repeated pleas by the Kurdistan Region's authorities urging Baghdad and international actors to intervene and fulfill their responsibilities.

“Protecting the Kurdistan Region's vital infrastructure is not just a local concern—it is a national obligation,” the KDP bloc concluded, stressing that Iraq's unity and economic security hinge on ending these attacks and holding the perpetrators accountable.
