ERBIL (Kurdistan24) — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday extended heartfelt condolences to the victims of the devastating fire that swept through a shopping mall in Kut, Wasit province, leaving at least 61 people dead and dozens more injured.

In an official statement, Barzani expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and reaffirmed the Kurdistan Region’s readiness to assist the victims and their families.

“With great sadness and sorrow, we received the news of the tragic fire in the city of Kut,” the statement read. “We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and pray to God for a speedy recovery for the injured.”

Barzani emphasized that, in line with the Kurdistan Region’s ongoing efforts to stand with those affected by disasters, all relevant institutions have been placed on alert to provide immediate medical care and humanitarian assistance. “The doors of the Kurdistan Region are open to those affected,” he affirmed. “The Ministry of Health and other concerned institutions have been put on standby to deliver necessary treatment and support.”

The prime minister’s message comes amid national mourning and growing calls for stronger safety measures following the Deadly fire, which broke out late Wednesday at the Hyper Mall, a five-story commercial building that had only recently opened.

Civil Defense teams managed to rescue more than 45 people, but officials confirmed that most of the victims died from smoke inhalation after being trapped inside the mall’s upper floors. Fourteen of the deceased remain unidentified due to severe burns.

The tragedy has sparked widespread grief across Iraq, with federal and regional leaders pledging aid and accountability. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway, with initial reports suggesting an air conditioning unit may have exploded.

Barzani’s gesture of solidarity underscores the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to assist in times of national crisis, reinforcing unity and cooperation across Iraq during moments of profound loss.
