ERBIL (Kurdistan24)The European Union has officially welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Syria and Israel, calling for its full implementation and urging all sides to cease hostilities and protect civilians. The agreement, brokered with the support of the United States and regional actors, has been hailed as a critical step toward restoring stability in the war-torn region.

In a statement issued by Anouar El Anouni, Spokesman for EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, the Union emphasized the need for “all parties to immediately stop all acts of violence, to protect all civilians without distinction, and to take immediate steps to prevent incitement and sectarian discourse.”

Sovereignty and International Law

The EU reiterated its call for Israel and all other foreign actors to fully respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The statement also expressed deep concern over the mounting human toll, stating: “We are appalled by the hundreds of victims of the last days’ violence, and especially by the violence reportedly perpetrated by several armed groups against unarmed civilians.”

The bloc stressed the imperative of accountability, urging that “all perpetrators of grave violations of international humanitarian law be held accountable and brought to justice – including with the support of relevant international mechanisms.”

Call for Inclusive Transition and Security Reform

Looking ahead, the EU underscored the importance of moving toward a comprehensive and inclusive political transition. “Now is the time for dialogue and for advancing a truly inclusive transition,” the spokesman said. The statement assigned responsibility to Syria’s transitional and local authorities “to protect all Syrians without distinction, and to take necessary steps towards disarmament, demobilization and the restructuring of national security forces in line with international standards.”

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a peaceful, inclusive, Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transition, pledging readiness to assist in facilitating that process.

The EU’s position aligns with recent calls by international stakeholders for a coordinated de-escalation and political resolution, as southern Syria continues to witness volatile security dynamics.
