PM Barzani, UNAMI Chief Reaffirm Support for Continued UN Work in Kurdistan Region

In a meeting with the UN's top Iraq envoy, PM Barzani demanded the KRG's constitutional rights and financial dues be guaranteed. He also stressed the need to end terrorist attacks on energy infrastructure and prosecute the perpetrators.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday emphasized to the United Nations' top representative in Iraq the critical need to guarantee the Kurdistan Region's constitutional rights and financial entitlements, while demanding an end to the terrorist attacks targeting the region's energy infrastructure and legal action against the perpetrators.

The high-level discussions took place in a meeting between Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and Mohammed al-Hassan, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Iraq and Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

According to a statement released by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the meeting involved a comprehensive exchange of views on the latest developments concerning the general situation in both Iraq and the wider region.

The KRG statement specified that the primary focus of the discussion was a strong emphasis on the necessity of respecting and guaranteeing the constitutional rights and financial entitlements of the people of Kurdistan. A key point stressed during the meeting was the demand that the Kurdistan Region be dealt with in a just manner, consistent with its official status as a constitutional and federal entity within Iraq.

Security was another central theme of the meeting. The statement highlighted a direct call to put an end to the terrorist attacks that have repeatedly targeted the region's vital energy infrastructure. In connection with this, the discussion underscored the importance of taking concrete legal measures against the individuals and groups responsible for carrying out these attacks.

In another part of the meeting, the KRG clarified that the importance of the continued work and presence of United Nations agencies throughout the Kurdistan Region was reaffirmed, underscoring the collaborative relationship between the KRG and the international organization.
