Turkey to Begin Supplying Azeri Gas to Syria in Landmark Energy Deal

Turkey to start Azerbaijan gas exports to Syria Aug 2 via Kilis-Aleppo route, supplying 3.4M m³ daily. Will generate 900MW power for Syria's crippled grid, marking major post-war energy cooperation amid 20-hour daily blackouts.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Turkey will begin exporting natural gas from Azerbaijan to Syria on Saturday, August 2, in a move that marks a significant shift in regional energy cooperation and signals a new phase in Syria's post-war reconstruction, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar announced on Wednesday.

Bayraktar said the gas will be transported from Azerbaijan to the northern Syrian city of Aleppo via Turkey’s Kilis province, located near the Syrian border. The agreement comes as Syria’s transitional authorities seek to revive essential infrastructure following nearly 14 years of devastating civil war that left the country’s power grid in disrepair.

According to Syria’s official news agency SANA, Syrian Energy Minister Mohammad al-Bashir confirmed the start of gas imports, stating that “from August 2, Syria will begin to receive 3.4 million cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan” through Turkish pipelines.

SANA reported that the incoming natural gas will enable the production of approximately 900 megawatts of electricity, forming part of a broader cooperative initiative to revitalize Syria’s energy sector. The country continues to face severe electricity shortages, with power cuts lasting more than 20 hours a day in some areas.

The gas deal follows a meeting earlier this month between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Syria’s newly installed leader, President Ahmed al-Sharaa, during which Baku pledged to support Syria’s energy needs.

In May, Minister Bashir had announced that Damascus and Ankara had finalized an agreement for Turkey to facilitate the delivery of Azerbaijani gas to northern Syria via existing pipeline infrastructure.

Azerbaijan, a gas-rich nation and long-time ally of Turkey, maintains strong diplomatic and economic ties with Ankara. Turkey’s decision to support the Syrian transitional government through energy cooperation reflects its growing role in shaping post-conflict recovery in Syria.

As the new Syrian leadership focuses on rebuilding critical sectors and restoring public services, the Azerbaijani-Turkish gas pipeline deal stands as a key step toward stabilizing the country’s energy landscape and reducing the crippling power outages that have defined daily life for millions.
