Duhok Launches Major Renovation Project for City Center and Bazaar
The project, covering 15 kilometers, will cost 3 billion 408 million Iraqi dinars (approximately $2.32M). It includes the complete reorganization and repair of streets and sidewalks, along with the removal of old utility poles that have lined the bazaar for decades.

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Duhok’s historic bazaar is set to undergo a large-scale renovation as part of the City Center project, aimed at modernizing infrastructure, enhancing accessibility, and improving the city’s overall appearance.
The project, covering 15 kilometers, will cost 3 billion 408 million Iraqi dinars (approximately $2.32M). It includes the complete reorganization and repair of streets and sidewalks, along with the removal of old utility poles that have lined the bazaar for decades.
Ismail Mohammed, the mayor of Duhok, told Kurdistan24: “This project is being undertaken by Duhok province and the Duhok municipality to reorganize and repair the center of Duhok, including its streets and sidewalks. It is essential for the bazaar, which requires significant reorganization and renovation.”
Municipality spokesperson Sherwan Hassan explained that the outdated utility poles—some more than 70 years old—are incompatible with the new Runaki project and electricity system. These will be removed and replaced with modern underground connections and new lighting poles. Many of the existing poles were once used to transmit electricity from both the national grid and private generators.
As part of the project’s accessibility measures, a dedicated pathway for the blind and disabled will be built along the sidewalks, ensuring safer and easier mobility for all residents and visitors.
This renovation follows other recent initiatives in Duhok focused on improving urban life and environmental sustainability. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has already embarked on a major greening project to restore and expand vegetation across the mountains surrounding the city, reinforcing its policy to promote green spaces and long-term environmental solutions.
Together, these projects signal a new phase in Duhok’s urban and environmental development—combining modernization with sustainability to create a cleaner, safer, and more accessible city for its residents.
