Areen Masrour Barzani Receives 2026 Global Recognition Award for Community Leadership

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Areen Masrour Barzani has been named a recipient of the 2026 Global Recognition Award, the organization announced on its website Tuesday, citing his leadership of the Kurdistan Foundation and its work spanning youth participation, education, environmental responsibility, cultural access, and community service.

According to the Global Recognition Awards, Areen Barzani directed the Kurdistan Foundation toward long-term planning rather than short-term assistance, on the basis that education, employment access, and civic participation depend on reliable opportunities. The foundation reports 25,000 volunteers, more than 29,000 people trained, over 35,000 job applicants supported, and more than 41,000 service hours completed.

The foundation's stated mission is to help people gain skills, knowledge, and connections that support fuller participation in their communities, offering access to learning, employment support, and service opportunities.

Among the foundation's flagship initiatives is Youth Hub, described by the organization as the largest youth center in both Kurdistan and Iraq, providing a space for young people to learn, collaborate, and discuss community issues.

The foundation has also pursued environmental education through the Climate.KRD 100 Schools Campaign, which introduces climate awareness and sustainability topics in schools, aiming to guide responsible choices among students and educators.

Areen Barzani has additionally backed a Kurdish text-to-speech initiative aimed at improving digital access for visually impaired Kurdish speakers, an effort the Global Recognition Awards said reflects the foundation's attention to language inclusion within its broader public-service work.

Global Recognition Awards said its review of Areen Barzani's nomination covered leadership, innovation, service, sustainability, social responsibility, and measurable impact. Expert reviewers used a 1-to-5 grading system, with 5 denoting exceptional or world-class performance, while a Rasch model was applied to create a linear measurement scale allowing the panel to compare nominees' achievements across categories.

The organization said Areen Barzani's reported results, planning, ability to mobilize volunteers, and attention to ethical decision-making supported his recognition in the Leadership category.

Alex Sterling, a spokesperson for Global Recognition Awards, said Areen Barzani earned the recognition by combining clear direction with practical service: "Areen Masrour Barzani has earned this recognition because he combines clear direction with practical service, creating systems that help young people, communities, and vulnerable groups take part in Kurdistan's future."
