Mazloum Abdi Condemns Pirmam Drone Attack as Assault on Kurdish Will

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi has condemned the drone attack on the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani in Pirmam, calling it an assault on the will of the Kurdish people and the institutions of the Iraqi state.

In a message posted on his official X account, Abdi expressed solidarity with the people and government of the Kurdistan Region and denounced the targeting of the prime minister's office.

"We express our solidarity with the government and people of the Kurdistan Region, and we strongly condemn the targeting of the Prime Minister's office," Abdi wrote.

He described the incident as "an unacceptable and immoral act," adding that it represented "an assault on the will of the people of the Region and a core component of the institutions of the Iraqi state."

The comments followed an announcement by the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate that two explosive-laden drones had targeted the prime minister's private office and the residence of the director of the Kurdistan Region's Protection and Intelligence Agency in Pirmam, near Erbil.

According to the directorate, the drones were Hadid-110 types and were launched from across the Iranian border at approximately 12:28 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17.

No casualties were reported.

The Counter-Terrorism Directorate strongly condemned what it described as an attack and aggression against the Kurdistan Region, saying those responsible would bear full responsibility for the consequences.

The targeting of senior political and security officials has heightened concerns over the security situation in the Kurdistan Region amid broader regional tensions and a series of drone incidents affecting Erbil.

Prime Minister Barzani said earlier Monday that an investigation by Kurdistan's Counter-Terrorism Directorate had determined that his private office and the residence of the head of the security and intelligence agency were targeted by Iranian drone attacks.

Barzani called the attack a "dangerous escalation" and a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, while pledging that it would not deter the government from carrying out its duties.

The latest incident also comes days after three explosive drones were intercepted over Erbil, according to the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate.

The repeated incidents have intensified concerns about the vulnerability of the Region's airspace and the need for stronger counter-drone and air-defense capabilities.

Abdi's statement adds a regional dimension to the response, highlighting the political significance of the attack beyond the immediate security threat. By describing the targeting of the prime minister's office as an assault on the will of the Kurdish people, the SDF commander framed the incident as an attack on Kurdistan's political institutions as well as its security.

The incident remains under investigation, while authorities have not announced further details about the perpetrators or whether additional targets were involved.
