Iraqi PM al-Zaidi Calls Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Declares Attack on Kurdistan Region's Security Is an Attack on Iraq's National Security
The federal prime minister condemns drone strikes in the strongest terms, vows the state will not be lenient in protecting Iraq's sovereignty, and confirms competent authorities will investigate and prosecute those responsible
ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) - Iraqi Federal Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi held a phone call on Tuesday with Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani to discuss the drone strikes that targeted several sites in the Region, expressing his strongest condemnation of the attack and declaring that any assault on the Kurdistan Region's security is an assault on Iraq's national security, according to a statement issued by the Iraqi Prime Minister's Media Office.
Al-Zaidi condemned in the strongest terms the drone attack that targeted the private office of Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the residence of the Director of the Kurdistan Protection Agency, the Parastin, stressing that these attacks represent a targeting of Iraq's security and stability as a whole.
In a significant addition to what had been previously reported, al-Zaidi made an explicit statement of national unity: "Any violation of the Kurdistan Region's security is a violation of Iraqi national security," directly linking the attack on KRG institutions to the security of the entire Iraqi state rather than treating it as a regional matter.
The federal prime minister reaffirmed the government's categorical rejection of any aggression targeting Iraqi territory, its institutions, or its citizens, stressing that the state will not be lenient in protecting Iraq's security and sovereignty. He confirmed that the competent authorities will investigate the circumstances of the attacks and pursue those responsible in accordance with the law, the first explicit commitment from Baghdad to a formal legal accountability process in connection with the strikes.
Barzani, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the federal prime minister for his call and follow-up, reaffirming the importance of continued coordination and cooperation between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government in ways that strengthen Iraq's security and stability and protect the safety of its citizens.
The new details from the Iraqi Prime Minister's Media Office go beyond what Masrour Barzani's office had previously disclosed, adding three elements not present in the earlier account: al-Zaidi's explicit equation of Kurdistan Region security with Iraqi national security, his categorical rejection of any aggression against Iraqi territory or institutions, and his formal commitment to an investigation and legal prosecution of those responsible for the strikes.
Two Hadid-110 drones launched from within Iranian borders struck the KRG Prime Minister's private office and the Kurdistan Protection Agency Director's landing site in Pirmam district, Erbil governorate, at 00:28 a.m. on Monday according to the Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Directorate. No casualties were reported. Masrour Barzani responded on Monday with the statement: "These attacks cannot stop us. We will continue our duties and the protection of our citizens."
