What Does Trump's New Economic Offensive Mean for Iran?
US President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping new economic campaign against Iran, warning allies against providing any financial lifeline to Tehran.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, a sweeping new economic campaign against Iran, describing it as the most extensive economic operation ever launched against a single country and warning any nation that assists Tehran's financial institutions or trade networks will itself face serious consequences.
Trump made the announcement in a post on his Truth Social platform, framing it as a response to what he described as Iran's refusal to accept a diplomatic deal.
"No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me. TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it. Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale," Trump wrote.
He said Iran's navy, air force and military manufacturing capacity had already been severely weakened, and described the country's economy as fragile. He also issued a direct warning to third countries: "Today, I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences. Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW."
Trump described the effort as "an ECONOMIC D-DAY" and called on US allies to join the campaign. "IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON," he wrote, closing his statement.
The last U.S. economic campaign on Iran was known as Operation Economic Fury, it was a whole-of-government sanctions and financial enforcement effort led by the US Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control.
It functions as an expanded revival of Washington's "maximum pressure" strategy against Iran, aiming to dismantle the country's oil trade, foreign currency exchange networks, and military procurement channels.
Rather than targeting isolated individuals or companies, the operation treats Iran's financial and trade networks as a single interconnected system.
Its stated objectives include cutting off the Iranian government's ability to generate and move revenue from oil and petrochemical sales, dismantling the so-called shadow fleet of tankers used for covert oil transfers, exposing informal currency exchange networks that funnel foreign cash into Iran, and blocking the supply of components used in Iran's missile and drone programs.
As part of the campaign, US authorities have designated more than 180 vessels, ship management firms, and front companies operating in the UAE and other maritime hubs, along with major Chinese refineries accused of processing Iranian crude.
The campaign also targeted currency exchange platforms and frozen hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency assets linked to the Iranian government, in addition to disrupting networks accused of using fraudulent identities to acquire restricted US technology.
The operation draws its legal authority from several executive measures, including National Security Presidential Memorandum-2, which directs a whole-of-government approach against Iran's revenue streams, along with executive orders empowering the US government to sanction key sectors of Iran's economy and to block the assets of weapons proliferation and terrorism-linked networks.
In response the Economic Fury, Iranian officials have characterized the sanctions campaign as an "Economic Jihad," or resistance economy, presenting domestic self-reliance and alternative trade routes as their response to the pressure.
Trump's announcement signals a significant escalation in Washington's economic pressure campaign against Tehran, raising the compliance risks for international financial institutions, shipping companies, and trading firms with any dealings connected to Iran. The scale of the measures underscores Washington's stated intent to isolate Iran's economy further as tensions between the two countries continue.
