Pakistan Army Chief Meets Iran’s President as Islamabad Pushes for War Mediation

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Pakistan’s powerful army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran on Monday as Islamabad stepped up efforts to mediate an end to the months-long conflict between Iran and the United States.

The meeting was reported by Iranian state television and came hours after a US source familiar with the matter told AFP that US President Donald Trump had spoken with Munir last week.

Munir also held talks with Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran’s highest national security body, Iranian state television reported.

Pakistan has emerged as a key intermediary in attempts to end the conflict. Islamabad helped broker a memorandum of understanding in June aimed at halting hostilities and creating a framework for peace talks, but negotiations have since stalled.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Sunday that Munir’s visit was part of Pakistan’s “ongoing efforts to help consolidate peace and security in the region.”

The latest diplomatic push comes as Washington prepares to intensify economic pressure on Tehran. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday that the United States would pursue what he called the “economic asphyxiation” of Iran, expanding secondary sanctions and warning countries of serious consequences if they refuse to join the campaign.

The meeting between Munir and Pezeshkian also follows growing international concern over the prolonged conflict, which has disrupted regional trade and energy flows and raised fears of further escalation.

Pakistan has maintained contacts with both Washington and Tehran, positioning itself as a potential bridge between the two sides as efforts to revive direct peace negotiations remain uncertain.
