Pezeshkian Links Strait of Hormuz Reopening to Agreement With Washington
Iran’s president says Tehran wants an agreement with Washington and is waiting for approval to reopen the strategic waterway to maritime traffic.
ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Friday that Tehran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic is awaiting a green light from US President Donald Trump, as diplomatic efforts continue to end the nearly seven-month conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Pezeshkian said Iran wants to reach an agreement with Washington and separately expressed Tehran’s desire to revive a memorandum of understanding between the two sides.
Speaking to Fox News, Pezeshkian emphasized that Iran wants to reach an agreement with Washington.
In separate remarks to NBC News, he expressed Tehran’s interest in reviving a memorandum of understanding between the two sides.
His statements came two days after Trump addressed the UN General Assembly, where he said he believed Iran would not reach an agreement to resolve the confrontation before the fall elections.
Reuters reported that US and Iranian negotiators in New York were discussing a phased road-map for moving beyond the war. The proposed road-map includes Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and Washington lifting sanctions on Iran.
The Strait has now become a central issue in diplomatic efforts to end the nearly seven-month conflict between Washington and Tehran.
Iran is seeking relief from the economic sanctions that have weakened its economy, while the United States is seeking to secure freedom of navigation through the world’s major oil transit route.
An Iranian official who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity said Tehran would not make any concessions on its nuclear program, even if Washington accepts Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
The official also emphasized that the Strait would remain closed until Iran’s conditions are implemented.
